LODGE-BASED SKI TOURING

Snowfall Lodge is located 20 miles east of Revelstoke, B.C., deep in the Selkirk Mountains of Canada. British Columbia receives some of the most snowfall on earth, and coupled with the terrain, is a backcountry skier and snowboarder’s paradise. Backcountry lodges allow skiers to access terrain that is otherwise inaccessible by road. Each week-long trip starts and ends with a helicopter transfer from Nakusp, near Revy, along with all of our equipment, food and drink. Then, for seven days, we’ll ski tour the glaciers, trees, bowls, and couloirs around the lodge, coming home to a professionally-catered dinner and relaxing sauna every evening.

The lodge is comfortable, warm, and spacious, providing plenty of comfort for a week in the wilderness. Perched right at treeline, Snowfall Lodge has gained a reputation as one of the best backcountry lodges in Canada.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 16: ARRIVAL

Our trip begins in Revelstoke, British Columbia. This lively ski town is the epicenter of Canadian powder skiing, and its ski resort is one of North America’s finest. We’ll meet in the evening for a welcome dinner and orientation, as well as a short gear check. The guides will answer any questions and provide a briefing for the helicopter flight into the lodge in the morning. If an early arrival is possible, a day of sidecountry skiing at Revelstoke or ski touring on nearby Rogers Pass are highly recommended.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 17: HELI TRANSFER TO LODGE AND SKIING

After breakfast in Revelstoke, we’ll pack up and head to the heli-pad. Each person will pack their gear into their ski touring packs and one additional small duffel, which allows for plenty of extra clothing for a comfortable stay at the lodge. The helicopter will make a few trips to the lodge, ferrying our group and equipment to the hut by early afternoon. Once we’re settled into the lodge, we’ll head out for an afternoon ski tour to check out the terrain and assess the snowpack.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 18- FRIDAY, JANUARY 23: SKI TOURING

For six days, we’ll track up the terrain in the Snowfall valley. From high alpine peaks with steep couloirs and faces, to open bowls and glaciers above the hut, to gladed tree runs below the lodge, there is plenty of terrain to keep us occupied for a week. The skiing is entirely human-powered, and we won’t have to compete with other skiers for fresh tracks, since the area is inaccessible to those not staying at the lodge.

If the weather is clear, we’ll climb high into the alpine and enjoy long, open runs with stunning views of the Selkirk Mountains. If it’s snowing, we’ll lap the trees and pillow runs below the lodge. With three guides, we’ll have the ability to split up based on objectives for the day. In general, there will usually be a group that hopes to go big that day, skiing as many vertical feet as possible, and a “chill” group, who might decide to ski for half a day, or ski laps close to the hut so that group members can call it quits whenever they get tired. A third group will be somewhere in the middle, skiing all day at a more relaxed pace. And, if you want to take a day off, you can lounge around the hut, enjoy the sauna, read, and relax.

Each morning, we’ll wake up around 7AM to a freshly prepared breakfast. After gearing up for the day, stretching, and making our lunches, we’ll head out around 8AM and ski until 4PM if energy allows. We’ll be greeted upon our arrival to hot soup and après snacks and drinks. A sauna session often follows as dinner is prepared, and we’ll usually eat a hearty dinner around 7PM. After dinner, our nights can take many different directions, from mellow evenings recalling deep face shots and epic runs from the day, to card games and whiskey drinks in the candlelight, to a full blown party, and everything in between.

Canadian backcountry lodge trips are one of our favorite kinds of ski trips in the world. The combination of snow quality, ski terrain, comfortable accommodation, great food, and a remote feel make this trip a bucket list item for every backcountry skier or rider. Over the course of the week, you’ll feel your worries from the “real world” melt away as you become closer with your lodge-mates. These trips allow you to be present in a way that is hard to find in modern times.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 24: DEPARTURE

After breakfast, we’ll pack up and move our equipment to the heli-pad for our flight back to civilization. We’ll arrive back in Revelstoke by noon, allowing plenty of time to catch an evening flight home. Or, spend the night in Revelstoke and fly home on Sunday.

For those staying in Revy for the night, we’ll have a celebration dinner in town as we slowly re-enter the world that we left behind. It has only been a week in the wilderness, but it feels like a lifetime.
